Built my 'No-Weld Grinder' years ago with Tracey Mickley's plans. Best tool in my shop.

I will second Wilmont Grinders. Chris Williams, the owner, is the head of the NC Custom Knife Makers Guild and is a great guy. You can't go wrong. Just remember, this is the main tool for making knives using the stock removal method. You will be using this for years and if you need to sell it you will have no trouble and you won't get killed. Buy a grinder from a place you can trust because you will have to work these people in future. Chris is a great guy and has helped me even though I bought my grinder elsewhere. I have have given him business and will any future grinders from him. Good luck.

I'll agree. You can't go wrong with a Wilmont. Chris goes out of his way to help you get what you need. I wish he had been in business when I got my grinder.

Ok, i have been looking and the little buddy is probably what i will get. Considering i have never ground anything this may be a good start. However, assuming i enjoy the knife making process, would i be kicking myself for not buying its big brother in a year? I am particularly wondering about a variable speed motor. Is this a big deal once you have some years of skill? How does the variable speed motor help you?

If you can afford to buy the bigger grinder with variable speed then do so.
Variable speed allows you to grind to higher grits while building up less heat in your blade (running the grinder at slower speeds). It also applies less wear on the belts (heat kills most belts) Slower speeds also give a better finish (smoother operation) Knifemakers that have variable speed usually don't want to work without it. Knifemakers who do not have variable speed all want it __________________ Barry Jones Knives |

Agree with Barry. You will wish you had if you don't do it now. Variable speed is awesome.

By the way we live in Davie county which is near Winston Salem. The VFD alone is about $600 and i would need 220. Right now i don't have 220 in my shop, but i will in a few months i think.

Allow me, as a newbee to make a couple observations..
1. Buy the biggest best grinder you can afford and save until you get what you want. I bought harbor freight tools but did not skimp on a variable speed grinder and have never regretted it for all the reason Barry spoke about. Also as a newer maker you can control speed to help limit errors. Barry is way beyond that but me on the other hand make mistakes often. 2. Remember if you do no like making knives, a good grinder holds its value better and is not hard to sell. 3. Consider visiting a knife maker near you. You may have already done this. I wish I had but did not know anyone. I plugged into the Guild and have gotten some great advice. 4. A good grinder seems expense to buy but remember these tools last a good number of years. If you really are sure you want to make knifes the marginal cost of the bigger grinder will be forgotten quickly as you enjoy it. Good luck. |

Check out Beaumont Metal Works also, Rob makes the KMG, he's near. Columbus OH and makes a fantastic machine. I bought my 2x72 with a 2hp motor and variable speed controller. Small wheel adapter, 8"wheel and flat platten. Rob is also a great guy, makes a bomb-proof machine at a reasonable price. Easy to use and adjust. He also makes horizontal and disc grinders as separate units. No matter who's product you buy do some research and compare prices\options the 2x72 is totally worth it.
I've bought belts from true grit and have been very satisfied. Good luck Sir Alex __________________ AT "We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow, And watch where the chalk-white arrows go To the place where the sidewalk ends." Shel Silverstein |
